Know Your Masonry

- Soft, handmade clay bricks (common in older homes) are porous and absorb water quickly. They need a breathable plaster that won’t dry out too fast.
- Hard-fired or pressed bricks have a smoother, denser surface. They may require a bonding agent or a rough coat to help the plaster adhere.
- Concrete blocks (CMU) are highly absorbent and often uneven. They benefit from a base coat that evens out the surface and controls suction.
- Stone or mixed masonry can vary widely in texture and density, so test adhesion and adjust your mix accordingly.
